As a teen mom I’m sure the idea of going back to high school fills you with all sorts of emotions. You’re excited and ready but apprehensive and maybe a little scared because you don’t know what to expect. You might be questioning if you can even do school again; after all, your focus has been on your baby and not on remembering math equations. Well, do not fear any longer and do not question your abilities! I’m here to tell you that you absolutely can finish high school. You will graduate and be able to move into that next phase of life with your head held high. You might be asking yourself, how is this possible? Let me help you finish high school! Here’s how:
- Muster up your motivation and confidence to ask for help and believe that you can do it!
- Come to Hope House! If you are a parenting teen mom between the ages of 15-21 and had your baby before your 20th birthday, then you are eligible for our programs. You will talk with our education & career coordinator, and she will walk you through your options. Apply Today – Hope House Colorado
**If you are not eligible, don’t be discouraged; read through this for helpful tips and at the bottom I will give you an idea of how to make this happen on your own.
- At Hope House you have options on completing high school: You can get your GED (4 tests: Reading Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies) or work through an online high school option that we offer called Penn Foster. You can get your high school diploma in 21.5 credit hours. Through Hope House, both options are FREE to you! And both are self-paced.
- Once you choose, you begin working! With the GED, you will focus on one subject at a time. With Penn Foster, you will focus on one class at a time. If you need help, you reach out to the high school & GED coordinator, and she will provide a tutor to work one-on-one with you. We also have child care available while you are at Hope House studying!
- Buckle down, focus and don’t give up! Some days it might feel like too much and that you’re not going to make it – on those days, just focus on one thing to complete. If you look at all you have to do, it can become very overwhelming. Instead, break it down into small steps and celebrate your accomplishments. No matter how big or small. You studied for an hour… celebrate! You read an entire chapter… celebrate! You completed a pretest or lesson… celebrate! BE PROUD of everything you are doing because each small step leads you towards your goal! YOU WILL GET THERE. Stay consistent and don’t give up! You are going to graduate high school.
- The final thing: Once you do complete your high school requirements at Hope House, we will do a cap & gown graduation ceremony – just like all of the high schools. You will get to WALK ACROSS THE STAGE and receive your diploma!! Friends and family can come and celebrate this HUGE accomplishment with you!
**Not eligible for Hope House? That’s ok! You can complete your GED through the local community college. Whichever college is closest to you (Red Rocks, Front Range, Community College of Denver, Emily Griffith Technical College, etc.) offers GED prep and testing. If you are on government assistance of any sort, you can talk to your caseworker and there are options to help cover the costs financially. The youth workforce in your county is another idea. Here is a website to help find one near you: Local Area Workforce Centers (cotrainingproviders.org)
If you are a teen mom questioning whether or not you can complete high school, I highly encourage you to take that first step and reach out to Hope House or the local community college to start working on your high school diploma. I believe in you and KNOW you can do it! Show yourself and your child that if you put your mind to something, you CAN reach your goals. There’s no better time to start than NOW! You’ve got a world of opportunity waiting for you out there, follow the steps above and make it happen!
