We love book club!
Celeste and Emily here! Book Club has become our favorite part of the week. What is Book Club, you ask? Book Club at Hope House is a ‘Mom-Fun’ class that focuses on literacy, community and FUN! Every Friday morning at 10 a.m., we gather with mamas, drink coffee, eat bagels and talk about the latest book. Last year we read a total of six books together: Love Lives Here, I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, Where’d You Go Bernadette, Maid, Anxious People and The Silent Patient. The overall ‘top pick’ in 2023 was The Silent Patient – a book that had us all excited to keep reading! So far, this year, we are already on our fifth book of the year! This month we are beginning, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It. This year we even started a new tradition of making waffles during the start of a new book. Waffles and words… It doesn’t get much better than that. Ha!
Hear from Celeste:
Hi, my name is Celeste, and I am the development coordinator here at Hope House! I have been a part of our Book Club for a little over a year and have LOVED every second. One of the last times I frequently read was in high school and that was about seven years ago – yikes! I was nervous to join Book Club since I hadn’t been actively reading in years, but the mamas made me feel so welcomed, and I learned that many of them were at the same spot in their reading journey too!
In 2023, my favorite book that we read was The Silent Patient – a shocking psychological thriller about a woman’s act of violence against her husband AND a therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive. At first and as staff, we were a bit nervous to read a genre like this with mamas, but after some convincing from mamas who are veteran Book Club goers, we agreed to read the book, and I am so glad we did! It was the first thriller that we read as a book club, and PHEW did it have us chatting up a storm! It was genuinely so entertaining to hear about everyone’s predictions and opinions on certain characters/situations! I love a good thriller/mystery with Book Club because it feels like we get to be detectives together – hehe!
Hear from Emily:
Hi! My name is Emily, and I am the personal growth educator here at Hope House. I am not going to lie; reading has always been a challenge for me. In school, I was never one to sit down and dive into a story. I would get bored, lost and frustrated. That all changed when we started the Hope House Book Club! Joining Book Club changed my perspective and enthusiasm for reading. In Book Club, we debrief our readings and then listen to part of the book in class. I love getting to talk about books with people that I adore. It brings a new level of excitement and energy to each book that we read. It has been so fun reading different genres. I probably would have never picked up The Silent Patient, but I am so glad that I did!
My favorite book from 2023 was “Where’d You Go Bernadette” by Maria Semple. It’s a story about a young girl, Bee, who is on a mission to find her mom. The story is witty and full of unexpected obstacles that keep you laughing and rolling your eyes. It is a lighthearted book that is so fun. When we finished the book, we watched the movie together. It was so cute! 10/10 would recommend. Stop by my desk if you want to borrow it sometime!
Whether you are an avid reader or you want to improve your literary skills, we would love for you to join us for our next book club! Everyone is welcome! During each class we debrief our previous week’s reading and then we listen to part of the following week’s reading via Audible – so you don’t have to stress about being picked to read out loud. We promise you; you can do it! PLUS, you get Christmas points for attending and get to hang out with some pretty cool people.
We can’t wait to read with you soon!
